Business Profile: Scott Williams - Bisbee P & H Mural

 

Lifewall for Business is built around capturing the vision of a business and proclaiming it to the community through murals and canvas prints.

In order to be the best, we need to invest into each business to the fullest, and truly understand what it values and envisions (It sounds pretty technical, I know). It's actually incredibly rewarding to get to know the business leaders of Marshall on such a personal level!

You may have read our feature on the Bisbee P & H murals that we put up this past summer. What you haven't heard is the "Good Stuff", why Scott wanted these murals in the first place and what these murals say about Bisbee P & H as a company.

If you don't know Scott, you should.. seriously. Scott will welcome you in, give you a firm hand shake, look you in the eye and give it to you straight. Whatever the topic is, no fluff just straight talk.

If we ever create a Lifewall hall of fame, Scott will be inducted first.

Scott loves Marshall, he loves the history and the people. Scott knew right away that he wanted a timeline of the history of Marshall to circle his whole lobby (how cool!) spanning from the late 1800's - Present. Yes, Marshall is that old!

Immediately we began work on compiling TONS, and I mean TONS of photos from every historical record we could find in Marshall. As the project unfolded, Scott would stop by and check on the progress, we would often times get caught up talking about a specific photograph and how Bisbee was involved or the story behind certain buildings like the Atlantic Hotel or the old drug stores in the mid-1900's.

The second mural that Scott knew he wanted was more personal, he wanted a wall dedicated to all his past and present employees, and I really mean ALL. Scott was much more picky about his employee wall - which is a GREAT thing - it was personal and he wanted it to be perfect!

To an unsuspecting bystander with no sense of insight, Scott's murals look like just that, murals! But, to someone who pays attention, Scott's murals are so much more. They are his values, his history, and his mission.

Talk to Scott about his murals for five minutes and it becomes evident what they mean to him. Scott believes Marshall will always be the place for Bisbee to be located; it was a promise he made to his father-in-law when he took over the business. Scott always remembers who worked for him, and they're more than people; they're friends and family, essentially what Scott's murals say is what Scott is all about. He's about history, he's about Marshall, and he's about people.

Scott's murals aren't just pictures; they're a mission statement.

Lifewall for Business: Helping leaders bring their visions to life on their walls!

Back in 2012, we started Lifewall as an online business with the intention of working with individuals and families who want to transform their walls into something that reflects who they are and what they love.

But apparently, starting & growing a business isn't always as predictable as you might think. Because to our huge excitement, things have changed quite a bit. We're serving more people locally, right here from our store (while keeping the website going too), and connecting with people on a much more personal, one-on-one level.

And we haven't worked just with individuals and families -- we've been creating things for businesses and organizations as well.

But it's more than just creating "things." Business & organizational leaders have been walking into our doors more & more with incredible visions about who their businesses are, what they want them to be, what they value, and the unique messages they want to send to their customers.

And it looks like that trend isn't going anywhere (yay!). 

In light of all of this... we're doing something exciting. We're officially launching our new Lifewall for Business brand.

What Lifewall for Business aims to do is this: help business leaders bring their visions to life on their walls.

With that goal in mind, we're completely rethinking our approach to our business projects. Rather than focusing on what we can create for your walls, our first objective is to fully connect with leaders to understand their vision for their own businesses, and the specific messages they'd like to send. With that as the groundwork, we'll be led by the goal to make your vision a reality, instead of just what might look good on your walls.

We're super excited about this. We're excited to connect with more leaders on a more personal level to truly understand what drives them, we're excited about the variety of projects we'll get to help create, and we're excited to spread the word about how easy it can be to translate your vision into life on your walls.

Now open until 7pm on Thursdays!

As we've made a more local focus in the past several months, we've realized just how difficult it is for some people to stop by and work with us. Makes sense! When people work from around 8-5pm, it's often difficult to visit another business that's open from... 8-5pm. 

What are we doing about that?

Friends show friends cool pictures from Chile.

Good grief, what a busy past few weeks!

We've made it through the Christmas/New Years craziness, had a blast doing it, and we're ready for what 2014 has in store. 

That's all cool & everything, but in all honesty: it's been exhausting (in a good way!). 

So, we took it as a pleasant, welcome surprise to see Matt Versaevel and his sister Ashley stop by yesterday to say hello. Matt even brought a treat for us -- pictures of his recent stay down in Chile!

That said, the rest of this post will be dedicated to some raw Chilean beauty. It'll hopefully be a nice break from the MN cold that's plagued us the past few days.

The one word that describes these past couple of weeks.

It's this word. This one right here:

BUSY. 

To many, it's a burdensome, exhausting, unwelcomed experience. 

But not to us! 

To us, it's motivating, inspiring, and makes us love what we're doing even more. 

Why? Fair question. Here's a very short answer: 

We're hearing some incredible stories. 

Stories about loved ones, favorite memories, tremendous passions, and lot more that will be retold through gift giving this Christmas season. 

Typing this, I wish we could spill ALL of these stories with YOU, so you can experience them in a small way. Unfortunately, we'd be spoiling a lot of Christmas gifts. 

And guess what. Despite the busyness, there's STILL time for YOU to bring in your stories, to share your passions, your memories, to create a gift that really matters this Christmas season.

A History of Marshall at Bisbee Plumbing & Heating

We started Lifewall as an online, ecommerce-based business. But ever since then, we've been more & more drawn to work right here in the area.

And we're not complaining! Working with people one-on-one, face-to-face, seeing clients' reactions to what we create -- it's all been super cool.

But recently, we completed a community-based project like none we've done yet. A series of murals featuring iconic shots of the Marshall area, ranging from the late 1800's to right now. 

We haven't just learned a lot of historical stuff. We've gotten a unique snapshot into how a particular business came about in this community -- where's it's come from, where it's going, and what drives it to keep doing what it's doing.  Here are a couple of shots from our project at Bisbee Plumbing & Heating in Marshall. 

The beginning of the timeline - starting with Marshall in the late 1800's... 

... moving into the 1900's & 2000's. 

The employee mural, featuring the projects & employees that have made Bisbee what it is today. 

Like most of our projects, StickIt was the material used for the walls, and it went very smoothly! Here are a bunch of pictures that take you through the process.

Wall #1 before we Lifewalled it. Very white.

1st panel done, a whole bunch to go. 

We used ladders for this project because we're not 8 feet tall.

Jacob plays extremely close attention to detail. This is a shot of him in the zone.

Finishing up the first wall. Look at the determination in Jacob's face to dive right into the next one.

The second wall. Not bad, but not glam. We took care of that.

There he is again. Off his leash, attacking that wall.

Once we got into the swing of things, we were cruising. That's why Jacob's blurry here.

Nearly finishing up the second wall, ready to get to the third & final.

...About that third & final wall. I forgot to take in-process pictures because it went so well! Sorry 'bout that. 

The special thing about this project was the amount of time that went into collecting, restoring, compiling, and touching up old photographs.

And wow, oh, wow. Did we get some amazing help with that. 

The SMSU History Center, the Lyon County Museum, and the Marshall Independent all played a huge role in this project by providing things to actually look at. We got to know some people pretty well just through digging into old photos. And of course, our beloved partner photographers John Krohn and Bill Van der Hagen also made an appearance in the murals. 

Three words can most appropriately sum up this project: "Barrel o' fun."
